On foot, the souk is 5-10 minutes away from Masjid al-Haram, depending on which exit you take. Those on Ibrahim Al Khalil Street may walk southwest to the Jabal Omar Towers, where you will find multiple entrances marked “Souk Al Khalil.” Souk Al Khalil 1 is the closest to Masjid Al Haram.

One of the major attractions for visitors to Souk Al-Khalil is the excellent range of shopping opportunities. You will find many local and international brands that give this souk an air of modernism compared to traditional older souks.

  1. Dates & Local Delicacies:
A trip to Makkah is not complete without purchasing a stock of premium dates: Ajwa, Sukkari, Medjool, and other local sweets like mamoul (date-filled cookies) or baklava boxes for family members back home.
  2. Perfumes & Cosmetics:
The Middle East is known for its perfumes, oils, oud wood chips, and incense. At Souk Al Khalil 1, you will come across Raydan, a perfume shop on the 4th floor, offering custom perfumes and attars, which are water-based, non-alcoholic fragrances. Moreover, you may also find perfumes and cosmetics on the first floor of Souk Al Khalil 2, such as Al Jazera Perfume and Amjad Al-Oud.
  3. Gold & Jewelry:
While Makkah may not be a gold purchasing destination like Dubai, Souk Al-Khalil 2 features a handful of reputable gold and jewelry shops on the 1st floor, like Al-Jawhara Al-Yamama and Fayendra, that offer customers traditional Arabian gold designs, as well as gold bangles and simple trinkets to remember your pilgrimage by. Souk Al Khalil 3 is also lined with jewelry shops like Golden Rozen, Knouz Al Alam, and Kunz Al-Isma.

Stalls at Souk Al-Khalil

The mezzanine and ground levels of Souk Makkah Gate and Souk Al-Khalil 1 are peppered with kiosks and small retail stalls across the corridors. Most often, these stalls sell Islamic accessories, small souvenirs, snacks, prayer beads or tasbeeh, attar, miswak, dates, mobile accessories, water, and travel essentials. The stalls are owned by local vendors, offering affordable alternatives to the larger shops selling international brands, making them one of the best places to visit in Makkah.

Reasons To Check Out The Stalls:

There are plenty of great reasons to explore the stalls at Souk Al-Khalil. Below are some of them!

  • One of a Kind: Many small vendors stock handmade goods that cannot be found at chain stores, making them unique. Think embroidered prayer hats, regional handicrafts, and potentially kitsch and giftable souvenirs.
  • Friendly Vendors: Shopping at the souk is a social experience. Many shopkeepers are genuinely friendly, love to engage in conversation, and may even offer a small sample to try (especially in dates and spices).
  • Bargaining: The larger brand-name stores will have fixed prices; however, at many of the stalls, bargaining is welcomed and expected. Politely negotiating is part of the fun, and you might even walk away with a better price.

Pro Tip: When shopping at pop-up kiosks, it is always good to carry small bills and coins in case a kiosk does not accept cards.
